Cultural Heritage of the Manor

Dr. Etbin CostaThe castle contained a valuable family archive and a large library, a legacy of a relative, Dr Etbin Henrik Costa, who was a mayor of Ljubljana, among other things. The library featured over 5000 books and over 3000 newspapers and magazines, diaries and the legacy of Henrik Schollmayer, including many rare books and 17th century archival materials, Valentin Vodnik's manuscripts, documents from the Illyrian provinces, the Holly Alliance Congress, etc.

Part of this archive is now kept at the Archive of Slovenia, whereas another part is located at the National University Library in Ljubljana. Many valuable books were stolen or destroyed during the Second World War.

In 1933 and 1934, the Slovene poet Oton Župančič frequently sought peace and inspiration in Koča Vas. There, he wrote his well-known collection of poems "Ostrnice".

Skiers from BlokeHenrik Schollmayer von Lichtenberg popularised skiing in Slovenia; by publishing the manual "Auf Schneeschuen", which apart from skiing described the landscape and the local lifestyle in great detail, he made an important contribution to the historiography of the region.

He also published a book entitled "Snežnik in Schonburški vladarji" (Snežnik and the Sovereigns of Schonburg), which also describes fragments of Slovene history in Notranjska.
